Meet my roomie - Wesley Wu. I have no idea why he is putting that in his mouth, but I probably drove him to that.

I came home and he was washing the dishes.

That's bad, because Most of the dishes were mine.

In that moment my world crumbled, everything came crashing down.

It hit me.

I am the bad roommate.

This experience is not new. I've walked in on people doing the chores that I had neglected before. But never did I recognize the larger story that these experiences would tell.

I instantly started thinking of all the others. My soul began to apologize.

I'm sorry Brandon. Please Forgive me Patrick. And Debbie for that matter, who frequented her fiance, Patrick's, list of chores at times. Oh will we have a new tomorrow Kenny? Kip say it aint so. Casey you got the worst of it - we were together so long. And now...Wesley... you too.

Ug. I can't even look at myself in the mirror (that stands above the kitchen sink) any more.

How many conversations took place about me behind my back. How many times have I been the object of cursing. It's all OK.

Brutal.

Painful to see. We laid out a table full of them. Ideas that is. They were slaughtered like a fat chicken at purdue farms. We prefaced our meeting with the fact that these were very early thoughts - didn't matter.

It was as if Mike and Luker was playing good cop bad cop.
Mike was good cop - he says it was bad.
Luker was bad cop - he says it was bad and is unworthy of their presence.

Unforgiving.

It felt good though. It let me know I'm among greatness. It was like calibrating what the rest of my career will be like. I sat for 5 minutes on the couch after and thought...how would I come back.

All I could think is, "I don't know what I'm doing." What the hell did I go to school for...........

Steve Luker used to be long time partners with Mark Fenske, my professor at the VCU Adcenter. Fenske actually spoke positively about Luker, which is a very rare occasion. This makes me believe I can trust Luker's opinions in another realm than I'm used to. As Fenske was the kind of guy to mentally grab you by the ear and lead you to enlightenment.

Defining Success

I'm in between getting my Master's Degree and getting a job.

I'm on the hunt for where my feet will be planted next. I've stressed about locations. Whether bigger is better or smaller is king. I've reached out to people that could be real mentors to me. I've played with my portfolio until it couldn't be played anymore.

There was only one thing left to do, to be prepared for this new world: figure out what I want.

It is the hardest question - what do I want? Why does that question mark look soo huge?

I still haven't answered the question, but after some soul searching I have come to a define my success with these three things.

1 - My ability to keep my integrity.
integrity of character. integrity of work. integrity of creativity

2 - To maintain personal balance.

making equal investments in my home life and work life

3 - My ability to love people.

measured by the level of trust I have in relationships

I find it interesting that none of these really have anything to do with my potential, my results or my performance. But are all more challenges of how to produce the best results, potentials and performances. I don't need to be the best. I need to be true to God, myself and my people.

My brother says that this is the city where everybody is doing
something. Like the guy carrying two ladders across the street. He's
just doing something. The woman talking loud about stocks on the
phone. And the man selling mustaches on the corner. No one is
questioning them. They're just doing it. Anywhere else, people would
look and stare. Not here.

But what am I doing? Comming to this city?

All this going on - why is it that I think I will rise above all of
this?

The further I walk through the city, the further I walk
through my biggest fears.

The more people I meet, the more I realize I am nothing like the people in advertising.

The Barack campaign has really created a brand that is out of control. It's somewhat reminiscent of the advertising for the passion of Christ. From the grass roots. But this campaign just does it to a level that most advertisisng agencies would marvel.

They haven't created a bunch of huge ploys to make Obama cool. They've only given the Obama brand to the people. You can actually create your own Obama blog on their website. You can find almost all the senator's speeches right on his website. With every dirty ad run against him he fights back the way that we all do in this modern society -YOUTUBE.

Does America owe me February?

Black history month began with a college sorority sponsoring a week of acknowledging the achievements of Fredrick Douglas. It was intended to mend poor race relations among all people. It soon extended to all all people in the Black Diaspora. Then it was extended to a month long celebration.

It's lost some meaning overtime, but now its extended to a lifetime, 'cause I am black history too.

Let's celebrate black history month. All of us. No mate who you are. Not because it's separate from regular history. Because it's our history. Because it's been shoved aside. Because our children won't remember if we don't. Because...

As long as African-American history is only an elective in schools across our great United States, the possibility of a great African-American future remains as dark as the history from which the race was born.

Recently, a few friends and I were discussing the great debate of DuBois and Booker T.

Among my African American group of friends were, college students, college graduates, master's candidates, a school teacher, fashion designers, an art director, a nurse, an FBI agent and more.

Well educated most would assume.

As our chat grew longer, we were dismayed in the fact that we knew so little of so much of the black history from which we come. We spent the evening piecing together the facts we knew about Fredrick Douglas and Marcus Garvey.

With our eyes near tears and our mouths filled with laughter, we questioned why Fredrick Douglas was just another Black face on the wall of our elementary school. Why I know the complete story of George Washington but can hardly tell the achievements of George Washington Carver.

Is it less relevant to know the achievements of the African American People?

Would knowing Black history transform Black America? Would it transform America?

I recently read the autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas, An American Slave."

He paints a vivid picture of slavery, which still seems to be relevant to the African American experience today.

I'm learning from his stories. My friends and I are standing on his shoulders.

How many more shoulders do I have to stand on that I don't know about?

The Holocaust in Nazi Germany was horrible.
The Genocide in Janjoweed Darfur is Horrible.

I went to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC a few days ago. It is the most gut wrenching experience you can have in a museum. It brings the holocaust experience down to earth in a way that makes you feel like you were there. I felt like I smelled the blood, struggle and ignorance in the air.

I could write for hours about those things, but feel very called to point out something you see after the museum tour. There is a small room out of sight to most (I almost walked right by it) that highlights the genocide in Darfur.

Up until then, the issue seemed to be something cool people used to inject into conversation, to make themselves seem more "aware." I find it interesting that, every-time I've heard someone talking about the conflict, they had not the slightest ability to satisfy my curiosity about the subject.

But now it is real. And there is a real genocide happening now. It's one thing to look at a genocide of the past and be sad that you were helpless. It's another to look at a genocide today and do something about it.

Are we scared of truth? More than the kind of truth we read in the papers. Or the kind of truth in the whispers heard around the water cooler.

Real truth. Truth that speaks to the very nature of our existence. The kind of truth that can't be altered by changes in the weather, shifts in culture, wars, fads or feelings. The kind of truth that explains the origin of the world. The reason why I eat and breathe.

I find it interesting that in a generation that demands nothing but the truth there can be so much the very mention of God sends people in an uproar by the masses.

Why?

It wasn't even a hundred years ago that the majority of the world defined it's decisions from government to business to family to neighborhoods by a higher being, most often referred to as God.

History shows us that there are dangerous repercussions to getting the understanding of God wrong (ie. the crusades and many other over zealous acts), but is there some truth behind the belief in God that has lasted so long throughout time.

Hm. That's an uncomfortable thought.

Worship

Others sing songs to worship.

Some people erect crosses, fly flags or burn candles

Others create objects of worship, like calfs made out of gold or spaceships in the sky.

Worship.

Some are known to write poems or paint abstract images.

Some go to work or shool.

Others have a drink at the pub or a swim in the pool.

Worship is most often found in the gym or on a basket ball court.

The mall is the epicenter for modern day worship.

What makes worship so important? What is its significant meaning throughout time? Does it take on a different significance today than yesterday?

How does worship develop us as people? Communities? Countries? Races?

We all chose what we spend our time on, what we place in our thoughts and what we make commitments to.

We all know what we worship.

But do we know it's significance? Do the people of old have a greater understanding for the place of worship in life?

Worship.

But they don't know it's water, that's just what they've been in all there lives.

How often are we placed in situations where we really don't get the "other" side to the story yet we are convinced that we know?

Who knows the war on Iraq better than those in Australia or Kenya or Russia? What would those in Iraq say that's different from those in the states? I'd bet that a place like Australia, that is soo removed can have a better non-biased view on it. Maybe.

But then there are scenarios where you have to be on one side or the other and there is no neutral party. No one to relate to but people like you and no one to understand but the people unlike you.

In the Christian community, the world is made up of people who love Jesus and people who don't. But what most people don't know about most Christians is that they've been on both sides of the fence. They've been in the water (not a christian) and now they're out of the water (they are a Christian).

The problem is that for some reason the church hides the times when they were in the water because of things they would consider shameful.

I've thought much about the time when I did not know the love of God. I do have moments when I dare to return to a life without Him. But I look back at where I've come from an I can never go back.

I just remember always asking the question what does my life amount to? What am I doing all this for. Am I living just to die? Am I working so I may rest?
I used to answer I'm living for happiness. But the older you get, the more fleeting happiness comes and the harder you have to work to get it.

I used to answer fulfillment but being what fulfills us changes from one year to the next.

But as a Christian man, I am happy because I have joy. And I am fulfilled because living a life with God is by it's very nature a fulfillment of life.

I would have never known this unless I were on this of the water and on the other.

Painting an awesome eye-opening picture of the decaying world around us, Johny cash is an interesting individual, to say the least.

You would never know how much of a man after the heart of God he was by his music unless you knew he was a man after God's heart. After you know, you realize that he wasn't singing about women in his songs. He was singing of the goodness of God. I'm falling in love with much of his work because I share many of his sentiments.

I wonder how my relationship with God will play out in my work. Does it at all. Jesus is my everything and my all in all.

I hope that my life is a song to God just like Mr. Cash's.

I like these campaigns for two reasons.

1- I think it is time women begin to rebel against this skewed image that the media presents as a woman. People should come to grips with how fake their expectation of a woman is. Men think women should look a way that is impossible by standards of reality. Women hold themselves to that expectation too because the world thinks that the woman on the cover of Vougue magazine is real - she's not.

2- This is an example of how change happens today. Someone stands up and makes a change in the way that they will do marketing or products or something. More companies need to take on relevant issues within our society. corprate America has caused enough damage on the world - It's time to start changing for the good.

They made fun of Mika Brezinski. Though her methods may have been flawed, I respect what she did. It takes guts to say what this isn't right. In the end she got made a fool of. The media is one of the world's most powerful tools of social change, whether it's trying to be or not.

I recall Benjamin Franklin's penny press. Maybe one of the most influential mediums in influencing the construction of early America. I'm sure there were very silly things he reported on, knowing his flippant personality. But I could doubt that the release of an ex-con is worthy of Headline news.

When the news begins to realize the power that it holds and begins to use it to help our country then things will begin to change. Until then, our society will continue to watch glamor stories like Paris Hilton on the headlines of the news being released from prison and adopt it into our unconscious perception of reality.

But it's only a skewed picture off the truth because behind the scenes others watch and think that the repercussions of drinking and driving is a joke and the walk from prison to the awaiting car is a walk of glory, not that of shame.

I'm not saying ignore the story, I'm saying reflect reality and investigate the injustice instead of supporting the glam off getting off early and smiling about it.

Here's a new one for you: what makes news? who had it right, Penny Press or MSNBC?

My first two weeks in London. WARNING-This is a rant!

These first few weeks in London have been interesting. I thought Kenya would be the hard leg of this trip. At lease then I was still surrounded by friends and churches.

I've got my cousins here but have not really found a church here at all. My cousins take better care of me than I do myself. They are amazing.

Every natural need of mine is met, I have not much to worry about in that regard.

In any other situation a difference in culture would be cool. But when you're thrown into one at work, the glamour of their accents fades fast. People talk faster than lightning. Most of the time, I can hardly understand what people are saying.

I find myself being the one always asking ... what? huh? ...um what is this reference to Lord lucan or Futbol. Who are they? That wasn't a barier I'd think I'd have to cross.

Sometimes I'd just try to figure it out without asking, those are the times I just completely lose the conversation.

But, none the less,
I'm getting along here.

After being a few weeks removed from Kenya, there are so many things that have already began to spill over from that trip into my life. The one I'd like to hightlight here is the need to expect of God to do something.

When I went to Kenya, I expected God to do so much. By the time I was leaving I realized that he exceeded my expectations, but met me where I needed to meet him.

When I came to London, I didn't expect anything. So when I got here I struggled for a while. But when I began to expect certain things of God, I began to see his work.

In today's society were taught to not expect anything from God because He won't meet expectations. Its tru that many times God doesn't meet us the way we want Him to, he does it in his way.

In Kenya, God showed me that he gave me the ability to cut off the head off a lion.

In London, I'm here to cut off the head of a lion again.

A mission isn't a mission until you go in a bush. I mean go in a bush.

I'm having fun on my mission to Kenya. As of now, hundreds of Kenyans have come to know the Lord Jesus. Many have been healed of alements and delivered of spiritual opressions.

I was in awe when a crippled boy came to me, asking to be healed. He struggled to say his name. "Minor," he said. His neck had no integrity, it couldn't stand on it's own. His shoulders slanted at a 90 degree angle, his back was curved like a "s" and one of his legs apeared to be longer than the other.

His mother leaned in an said that he has problems with his nervous system.

I began to pray, then a few other ladies joined in agreement with me. I've never prayed more fervently in my life. I opened my eyes to see exactly what was going on. We prayed long, and initially it seemed nothing was happening. For a moment, in the middle of prayer, there was an interesting dialogue that went through my mind. Eric, this is the kind of thing that only happens on TV. You are not in tune with God enough for him to do a miricle through you. I looked at him in the eyes and I said "God, you love this boy. Grant him a gift, bless his life, heal him, not through me but through the spirit that you put in me." It was as if I responded to the voice that I couldn't do it, But God can. I believe in God and I also believe his tangible power.

As we continued to pray, his shoulders began to straghten and his back moved out of it's contorted shape. We touched his legs and they began to stand together. We prayed long for his head to rise. We lifted his head and prayed for it to stay. Then we called out "Son, lift your head in the name of Jesus Christ your savior." And very slowly his head rose. He began to walk straight. He began to praise the Lord with clapping.

But, he still had trouble speaking. It was obvious he was not compleatly cured of the problems in his nervous system. When we left, he still was not compleatly healed of it. But he was filled with joy all over his body. He smiled from ear to ear.

It makes me wonder why God would grant so much healing and leave this one thing unchanged. God is a mystery to me. I think God leaves some things they way they are to keep us humble-it did it for me. Or maybe because he has a biger vision of what is going on in the world. It's his world, I trust that he knows.

I have seen the power of God. I'm glad I opened my eyes to see and gave him a chance when something was calling me to doubt.

I did it. I cut my hair.

Not because my mom didn't like it.

Not because it's hot in Kenya.

Not because anyone told me to do it.

Not because there is a gang who with them, called the Mungeki that are known for kidnapping people, overthrowing the government and leaving a trademark of beheading people.

Not because I felt God was telling me to do it.

But because God is moving in my life. In a way that I can never fully convey to anyone besides Jesus himself. Some time ago God and I had a conversation, one that I didn't know would be so critical now- thousands of miles away from home and nowhere near my comfort zone.

It went something like this:
God, I want you to be my father
Eric, I am your father. You are my son.
God, I want to be like you. I want to be a man. One that changes the world.
Son, to change it you must love it with your life. Come to me and I will initiate you into the next level of our journey together on earth.

Unfortunately, before I left for Kenya, a friend of mine died, whom I pay much respect to because of his spirit, occupation and work with children and unto the Lord. I remember not having anyone to help me through. Nothing. It took me a while to see this But when I did it made all the sense in the world. It set the tone for my trip, because I felt the Lord in a mighty way.

He comforted me and He reminded me that he told me long ago that He would be my father and I would be his son. Nothing has changed today.

I've got nothing like the african tribal boy who wants to be initiated into his tribe as a man. He is only given a spear and told to come back with a lion's head or a bear's claws.

I'm here in Africa to kill my lion. I should rephrase this - I'm in africa killing my lion. I will not return the same man. Which brings me back to my hair.

In the old testimaent, people used stones to build altars to the Lord to remind them of what God was doing with them. When Joshua crossed the Jordan, he built a huge altar there. Cutting my hair is my altar to God.

It is an offer of thanks to God and a reminder to me, so that I will never return back to the man I used to be.

Since Iv'e been here we've gone to all kinds of place that you would only see on the Discoverychannel speacial of Africa. I have more stories than I can remember the one that touches me the most was a little boy who came to me smiling. I sked him if I could pray for him.
He told me that his eye's had been itching realy bad to the point they changed to a orange color, Theyve been that way for 5 months. A film was produced over his eyes orange in color. He also shared of a skin condition and heart problems.

He was only 15 years old. His name was Dereck. We prayed ferverently. He weeped and couldn't stop. Then he looked at me and said, "I believe Jesus has healed me, thank you."

Praise God. Then he walked away.

Mothers Day Weekend

I went home this weekend and was greeted by two new faces. I've met these little girls before. But not like this. Jordan and Melanie. They are the next generation of our family. They held onto one another like grass stuck in between a cows teeth. It is an innocent love that they share. One moment they are battling for attention. The next they're giving piggy-back rides around the house.

I was sad this weekend as I wrote in my previous post. But it was a smile that these two shared that was like ointment for an open wound.

On this mother's day weekend we honored the mother's with a big party with lot's of festivities. My cousin Debi was the leader of this charge. Without one word of trying to take recognition, she really put her all into it. Hats off to her.

But it was the pure joy of having these kids, among so many others around this weekend that made Mother's day so special.

Ups and Downs
When you live you learn. What goes up must come down. anyone who knows me knows that
the last few weeks of life have been the greatest since I entered graduate school. These last 6-7 months have been like a slow climb up a steep mountain. The last few weeks have been like planting a flag on the mountain top.

In the midst of it all, I have only had a strong humbling that reminded me of God being my strength.

Which brings me to today.

Like a daggar in the heart of a bald eagle. I'm humbled in a compleatly different way. I'm humbled with a strong sadness that beats at my heart.

I've returned home again to visit my family one last time before I head out to Kenya. I'm hurt by a few circumstances that wouldn't be proper to place on the web. This is the thing. I know it is a part of the plan. I know this is neccisary for me to be the man God desires of me. I'm shedding off my skin so that I might continue in this initiation into manhood. Like a butterfly outgrowing a cacoon. Except it's not as beautiful.

No it's not beautiful.

All in all. I consider it joy to face trials of many kinds because I know that the test of life developes percevierence. And percevierence must finish it's work inside of me so that I can be mature and compleate. So that I will lack nothing. So that I can walk in the fullness that God has for my life.

In the end I know that all that happens to me works out for the Glory of God in the end.

Life is not for the swift but for those who endure. In the ups or downs.

The Paradox of Family

I went to see my family this weekend. We had lots of fun. When I arrived at the door, I was greeted by a young man named Courtney, his mother and grandmother. This is my sister's special friend. All of us, including my mother sat and talked about their intentions. He seemed to be a nice young man, but so did I at that age. I respect that he brought his parents and It was fun to give him the 20 questions.

We watched De la Hoya VS Mayfield (thats what i call him). We went to church. We went to see spider man3. What else could a man ask?

It was time to break the news. I'm going to Africa. Kenya to be precise. They asked every question thinkable. Then I told them I'm going to London. The excitement was even greater. It's good to have family behind you.

Then I left to go back to Richmond for more work. What a stark contrast. The second I got onto 664 I missed my family more than I ever have. I don't know if it was the fun we had or the long trip ahead.

Which made me think of family. My family. My future family. Everything surrounding Family.
I have plans for the possibly most exciting trip of my life, but the thing I can't get my mind off is my family. They are only a hand full of people that I have spent the majority of my life with.

There is a world out there with new things and new people. Why doesn't my heart faint to see them. Two reasons I suppose: Family never changes and family never stays the same. I know that doesn't make any sense but its true.

My family will always be there if they can be. Our love will never change. It's dependable. I want to be that for my future family too.

Also Family is always changing too with new life. My little niece was a blessing to be born. then she was a blessing to see walking. Then talking. Then the other day we sat next to each other and cheered "GO SPIDER MAN GO!" in the theater. I didn't tell her to, she just did. That was fun.

I wonder what will change next.

Thank you Lord for living and breathing among us and giving our family new life.

There are consequences to ignorance and hastiness all around us.

I wonder if he thought about gingivitis when he was picking out his grills. He was thinking they are cool. Why is it we don't think of consequences anymore?

Lot's of people are dying for keeping their eye on what's cool.

We've got our eye set on what's cool. I'm in advertising, I know that's true more than ever. But what is my responsibility to it. How do I shape cool? How do I affect uncool?

That's not my problem right now. I've got toomany ideas. I just can't prioritize. Everything seems equally important.

This is a joke.
It seems the concensus is to take whatever the boss or corporate america mandates as right behavior and call it ethical. What happened to people making the rules of what ethics are? will we leave every moral that we have left to the powers that be? Hm.
what about God? In the back of my mind I think that my ethical standards are somehow different, because I follow the christian lifestyle. My belief in the power that be. hm.
Can my way of life be translated into an ethic?

Elder cornish and I are very similar. I'm not sure if he's got some kind of attention problem but we always talk after church service, and he always gets distracted. He gives realy good advice but sometimes he gets distracted by his own thoughts. Many times we end up talking about used cars even though we began speaking about how crazy women are.
Does anyone understand women. I mean what gives them the right to be soo dificult. (and emotional). You know all that drama always heads for....
Oh wait. weren't we talking about eld. cornish? I suppose were very much alike.
